Broncos Boost Secondary With Longtime Foe Quentin Jammer
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) Champ Bailey was marveling at the Denver Broncos’ depth at cornerback after the additions of veteran free-agent Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and third-round draft pick Kayvon Webster.
“We are so stacked at corner,” the anchor of Denver’s defense said earlier this month. “We have so many guys that can play.”
Add Quentin Jammer to that list.
The Broncos signed the free-agent cornerback Wednesday after missing out on safety Charles Woodson, who decided to return to Oakland instead.
Jammer will join the Broncos on the practice field Thursday for the fifth of their 10 allotted helmets-and-shorts practices in advance of their mandatory minicamp in mid-June.
At 6 feet and 204 pounds, Jammer is a physical and durable 12th-year pro who can help the Broncos cover tight ends. He’s the third longtime San Diego Chargers player to bolt for their AFC rivals this offseason, joining linebacker Shaun Phillips and right guard Louis Vasquez.
Jammer spent his first 11 seasons in San Diego, where he had 21 interceptions and 130 pass breakups. He was the fifth-overall draft pick in 2002 out of Texas, where he played safety.
Since becoming a starter in 2003, Jammer has missed just three starts, opening 157 games, most by a cornerback in the NFL during that span.
Jammer had three interceptions last season. He returned one of them, against Denver in Week 6, for his first career touchdown. Matthew Willis didn’t recognize the overload on his side and failed to adjust his route accordingly, allowing Jammer to step in front of Peyton Manning’s pass for an easy pick-six.
Harris started on the right side opposite Bailey last season and will vie for that role again with Rodgers-Cromartie, who signed a one-year deal for $5 million. Harris also is the Broncos’ nickel back on passing downs, where he is honing his skills against slot receiver extraordinaire Wes Welker this offseason.
