Driver Dies After Head On-Crash With Semi On I-70 On Western Slope
GLENWOOD CANYON, Colo. (CBS4) - A woman has died and three people in the car she was driving were hurt early Wednesday morning on Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon when their car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a semi head-on.
The crash happened at 4:30 a.m. in a construction zone and both vehicles caught on fire.
It also created major traffic problems. Emergency crews shut down both lanes of Interstate 70 going through the canyon while officials investigated the crash and worked to clean up gas that spilled from the semi.
Officials with the Colorado State Patrol said one of the people hurt was a boy and that he was flown to a hospital in Denver after initially being brought to the hospital in Vail. The two other people who were injured -- a man and a woman -- were being treated at Vail Valley Medical Center.
In that area of the canyon Interstate 70 is currently down to one lane in each direction due to construction. The lanes reopened early Wednesday afternoon. The Glenwood Canyon Bike Path is expected to remain closed for several days due to the cleanup effort.
Officials said the semi leaked about 100 gallons of diesel fuel after the collision.
The semi driver, a man, suffered some minor injuries but wasn't taken to the hospital.
State Patrol said witnesses helped the people in the car get out after it caught on fire.
So far officials haven't released the names of any of the people involved in the accident or stated where they are from.
