Shoplifting Suspect Left Child Alone In Car

DENVER (CBS4)- A woman accused of shoplifting at a Home Depot store is also under investigation for leaving a child alone in her car in the parking lot.

Police were called to the home improvement store in Stapleton about 12:44 p.m. Thursday on reports of a woman who had shoplifted about $20 worth of merchandise.

When loss prevention officers detained her she told them she was babysitting a toddler, not her child, and that child was in the car in the parking lot.

The child was in the car for about eight minutes. Firefighters and paramedics checked out the child who was not injured. The child's mother was called and she picked up the toddler.

The woman was cited for shoplifting and some form of child neglect. Police will continue their investigation and interview the woman on Friday before they determine specific charges on the child neglect aspect of the case.

The woman's name has not been released.

The Department of Human Services was called to conduct their own investigation. This is standard procedure in cases involving children.
