COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Furman hired Colorado State assistant Niko Medved as its new men’s basketball coach.

A person familiar with the hire told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the school has not made an official announcement about its basketball coach. The person said Medved’s hiring will be announced on Friday.

Medved spent the past six years at Colorado State. He was previously at Furman for seven seasons under Larry Davis. When Davis resigned in April 2006, Medved was the Paladins’ interim coach for almost three weeks until Jeff Jackson was hired.

Jackson resigned last month after having just one winning season in seven years.

Medved was Colorado State’s director of player development and recruiting coordinator under first-year head coach Larry Eustachy this season. The Rams earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after winning 25 games during the regular season. They defeated Missouri in the tournament’s second round before losing to eventual national champion Louisville.

Medved will have his hands full in restoring a program that went 7-24 this past season. Furman loses its leading scorer Colin Reddick and two other seniors, Bobby Austin and Bryant Irwin. They combined to make 39 starts this past season.

Furman was 22-11 in 2011, but went 15-16 the next year before taking another step backward this past season.

The Paladins had winning records in four of Medved’s seven seasons on staff. He also helped guide the team into the 2002 Southern Conference tournament finals, the school’s lone championship game appearance in the past three decades.

Medved is from St. Paul, Minn., and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota. He spent the 2006-07 season on the Golden Gophers’ basketball staff.
