Big O Donates Used Tires For Playground Mulch

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver children are enjoying a playground thanks to a donation from Big O Tires.

The company donated 45,000 pounds of shredded tires that were turned into mulch. That mulch was spread onto the playground at Mount Saint Vincent's, a treatment center for children who have been abused and neglected.

The director has some close ties to the center.

"I came here as a 2-year-old in 1927. I grew up here and lived here 11 years. Now, after 53 years of volunteering, sisters had some money so they paid me to come back," Mount Saint Vincent Director Pete Zarlengo said.

The tire mulch provides a soft landing for children. It's also better for the environment because it keeps tires out of landfills and protects soil better than wood mulch.
