'King Cycling City' Honors Bestowed On Denver

DENVER (CBS4) - It's now official, Denver is the King Cycling City in the nation.

Outdoor retail giant REI bestowed the honor after a Facebook contest.

The company pointed to Denver's programs like B-cycle and Bike Denver as part of the factors in making their choice.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said during a ceremony at the Denver City and County Building on Thursday that the city deserves the title.

"Denver is proving to be a true-to-its-heart multi-modal city," Hancock said. "We are doing everything we can as a city to open up our roads to be accomodating to bicyclists and to make sure they are safe for pedestrians as well as automobiles."

The mayor also used the occasion to push the city's new Heads Up campaign. It encourages everyone to put down devices and look where they are going when they are driving, cycling and walking.

The mayor also took part in an organized ride from Civic Center Park to REI in the city's Confluence Park area on Thursday as part of the day's festivities.
