Immigrant Licenses Clear Colorado Senate

DENVER (AP) — Colorado is a step closer to giving driver's licenses to immigrants living here illegally. The state Senate gave final approval to the idea on a party-line vote Thursday.

The bill now heads to the House. It would make Colorado one of a handful of states that allows driver's licenses for immigrants in the country without legal permission. Licenses would be labeled to say the immigrants are not legal residents, and the identification could not be used to board a plane, vote, or to obtain public benefits.

The bill passed 20-15 after a short debate.

Sponsors say immigrants already drive regardless of legal status and should learn the rules of the road. Republican opponents fear the bill will encourage illegal immigration.
