Pot Growers Await Decision By Colorado Lawmakers

DENVER (AP) - It's the final day of debate for Colorado legislative marijuana panel, and the lawmakers saved one of the most controversial decisions for last. They're expected to vote Monday on a hotly debated plan to require marijuana shops to grow most of the weed they sell.

At issue is whether future recreational marijuana shops should be like liquor stores, which don't make the products they sell. Some want marijuana shops to act like current medical marijuana dispensaries, which are required to grow 70 percent of the marijuana they sell.

The debate has big consequences for Colorado's marijuana industry. Some say people should be allowed to specialize in just one aspect of the pot business, growing or wholesaling or retailing. But others argue that grow-your-own requirements help state officials track the drug.
