DENVER (AP/CBS4) — University of Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky is leaving the program he led to two NCAA championships during his 19-year tenure.

The school made the announcement Monday and says a national search for his successor has begun.

Vice Chancellor for Athletics Peg Bradley-Doppes is thanking Gwozdecky, noting he had returned the program “to the pinnacle of the collegiate hockey world during our great run in the middle of the previous decade.”

Although Gwozdecky was 443-267-64 at Denver, the Pioneers finished 20-14-5 this season, losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

The Pioneers are joining the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference next season following the breakup of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The move caught many people by surprise, inclduing former Pioneer-turned-Av Paul Stastny.

He tweeted “Shocked/speechless by DU Pioneers decision to let Gwoz go! First class coach all the way, one of the best I’ve ever had! True pioneer!!!”
