DNA Links Man To Cold Case Sex Assault From 2001

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver's District Attorney has formally charged a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a young woman in 2001.

Eddie Simon has been charged with second-degree kidnapping, two counts of sexual assault and third-degree assault.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 24, 2001, a 20-year-old woman was leaving her parents home to return to her own home. The charges allege that Simon, 45, pulled her into his car and took her to a remote area at the old Lowry Air Force Base site where he sexually assaulted her at knife point.

The woman was able to escape but no suspect was identified at the time.

Simon was arrested earlier this year on felony drug charges. His DNA was taken at the time of his arrest in accordance to Katie's Law. It was linked to the unsolved case from 2001.

Simon remains in custody in the Denver Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on March 26 at 9:30 a.m. to be formally advised of the charges.
