Explosion At Apartment Complex Injures 6 In Westminster

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) - One person is in critical condition and five others were also injured after an explosion in Westminster Sunday morning.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire shortly after 10 a.m. at Lakeview Apartments near 68th and Lowell.

"There was a confirmed explosion in the B building. Responding crews acted quickly and the fire was contained to the laundry room and out by 10:17 a.m.," Diana Wilson with the Westminster Fire Department said in a statement.

Of the six people injured in the explosion three were taken to area hospitals and one of them is in critical condition. He's said to be a man in his 50s and he suffered severe burns to his face. The conditions of the others haven't been released.

The explosion blew out drywall in three different apartments and the windows in another laundry room.

One resident ran door to door to help other residents escape.

"I saw the laundry room on fire and glass all over the place," a resident said. "I thought a vehicle hit it, it shook it so bad."

Approximately 50 residents are displaced because of the explosion. They were allowed to get some items out of their apartments. They are expected to be displaced for about three to five days. The Red Cross is helping them out.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

A Colorado Bureau of Investigation arson dog was called to the scene.
