DENVER (CBS4)– A man accused of murdering an Army veteran in July 2011 has been sentenced to life in prison.
Sgt. Anthony Silva was shot to death as he was returning to his home in Illinois. He was spending the night at a motel in northeast Denver in the area of East 39th Avenue and Paris Street, waiting for his father to pick him up for the trip home.
Ricky Scott was convicted on one count of first degree murder in Dec. 2012. He was found not guilty of felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery.
Scott, 23, met Silva, 25, at a bar near the motel where Silva was staying in July 2011 and later shot and killed him. Scott was later identified as a suspect by the Denver Police Department’s Homicide Unit and was arrested on August 26, 2011.
Scott was sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison without parole.
Silva’s parents travelled from Illinois for Thursay’s hearing. They were joined in the courtroom by numerous family members and friends. They spoke of their heartache at losing their son just as he was returning home to begin the rest of his life after serving in the military.
