DENVER (CBS4) – The 22nd ranked CSU Rams and the University of Colorado Buffaloes have been getting most of the headlines this basketball season, but the University of Denver Pioneers are quietly putting together quite a season.
The Pioneers have won six straight games, including an overtime win against WAC opponent Utah State on Thursday, Feb. 14.
The University of Denver is 13-2 in the WAC, 17-8 overall, and is just a game and a half behind Louisiana Tech for the conference lead. With home games coming up against New Mexico State, Texas-Arlington, and conference leading Louisiana Tech, the Pioneers still have a chance to catch the Bulldogs before the WAC tournament starts in Las Vegas on March 12th.
Pioneers head coach Joe Scott says of the Pioneers’ remaining schedule, “It’s going to be a challenge. Going to Northern Iowa is going to be hard, New Mexico State’s very good, Arlington is playing really well, and obviously Louisiana Tech is playing really well, so you really wouldn’t have it any other way in terms of trying to win your league crown.”
DU’s next game is Saturday, February 23 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Pioneers will face the University of Northern Iowa in the BracketBuster Challenge.
