Colorado Bill Would Cancel Suspected Noncitizen Voters

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Republicans are pushing a bill to cancel voter registrations of people believed not to be U.S. citizens.

The bill would require state election officials to check voter rolls against national and state immigration databases to determine if registered voters are citizens. Election officials would then have hearings for people to show proof of citizenship, or have their registration canceled.

The proposal being heard in a Democratic-led House committee Wednesday stands long odds. The bill is a reaction to Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler's effort last year to find noncitizens on voter rolls. Out of nearly 4,000 suspected noncitizens, Gessler's office says federal records show that the citizenship of 441 is in question.

Gessler's critics question the accuracy of that information and say his efforts could disenfranchise eligible voters.
