DENVER (CBS4) – Welcoming in a new year is synonymous with parties and having a good time, but being a responsible partier should also be a part of that good time.

For those who have had too much to drink and don’t have a designated driver or don’t want to take light rail, attorney Michael Sawaya says he’ll pay for your cab ride home.

“Anybody who is over 18 who sends us the bill for $35 within the Denver metro area,” Sawaya said.

He explained why he started offering to pay.

“I had a sister who died in a car accident involving alcohol when she was 16,” Sawaya said. “(She was) a really beautiful girl, and I’ve had thousands of cases; a few hundred involving alcohol where people have been injured or killed.”

He said consuming too much alcohol could not only your life, but the lives of many other people.

“I’m what you call deadly serious, and I’m serious about alcohol and driving,” he said. “It’s awful, it ruins lives. People who get the DUI have their lives ruined, people who get hurt have their lives more ruined, and people who get killed have no more life.”

If you are planning on going into downtown for New Year’s Eve, light rail or RTD will be running to help you avoid parking hassles. Both are offering free rides along all regularly scheduled routes from 7 p.m. Monday night until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
