Perlmutter Takes Gun Control Debate To House Floor

WASHINGTON, DC (CBS4)- Colorado Rep. Ed Perlmutter took to the House floor on Tuesday where he talked about the need for change when it comes to guns.

"You know the old saying, 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people.' Well, crazy people with guns kill people and we've got to start handling this so that we protect our children, our seniors, our shoppers, our churchgoers," said Perlmutter, a Democrat who represents Colorado Congressional District 7.

Several pro-gun lawmakers have also come forward since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Conn. where a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults.

They believe it's time to put the gun control issue back on the table.

"I never thought I would ever live to see children and babies slaughtered in America," said Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat who represents West Virginia.

After days of silence following the shooting the National Rifle Association released a statement that it was shocked, saddened and heartbroken by last week's shooting.

The NRA said it is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure it doesn't happen again.

On Tuesday, one of the largest gun dealers in the U.S. suspended its sale of "Modern Sporting Rifles" which includes the military-style AR 15 used in the Connecticut shooting.

The private equity firm that owns the company that produces Bushmaster Rifles announced on Tuesday that it would sell its stake in the gun manufacturer.
