Noxious Weed Blamed For 19 Horse Deaths At Training Facility

CANON CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - A noxious weed is being blamed for killing 19 horses at the Wild Horse Inmate Program facility.

Inmates train select mustangs at the facility.

The Bureau of Land Management says lab results show the horses ingested whorled milkweed, which is a highly toxic plant. The weed was in the hay fed to the horses.

The animals died last week. Several other horses are still recovering.
