Learn New Rules Of Job Seeking At The 'Winter Wonder Job Fair'

DENVER (CBS4) - Looking for a job can be stressful as job fairs and online job boards can be overwhelming. On Tuesday there's a spot that can help job seekers look for the perfect career.

Andrew Hudson, CEO of the website Andrew Hudson's Job List, stopped by CBS4 studios with advice for those looking for a job.

"I think everyone saw the numbers that came out on Friday -- 145,000 new jobs nationally, and the unemployment rate, on average, went down a couple of points," Hudson said. "But one of the kind of dirty secrets about those jobs numbers is they also talk about the number of people who have stopped looking for work."

Hudson said that's one of the things he runs into a lot. He said Tuesday's Winter Wonder Jobs event will be held to help those who are just stuck and unable to find a new job.

"Let's face it. A lot of times people who are looking for jobs are never really taught how to look for a job," Hudson said. "Like any game, there are rules to play and things to know about how to find a job and best position yourself."

He said the days of just handing out a resume are over.

"Today, there are computer systems that employers are using called applicant tracking systems, basically searching for keywords and key phrases," he said. "It means that every single resume that you write has to be tailored to that specific job that you are looking for."

Hudson said along with a good resume, attending job fairs and such events is key in the process of finding a new job.

"It's giving you some new knowledge. If you want to be good at anything, you need to practice and you need to learn how to be good at something."

Liz Ryan, one of the nation's foremost career experts, will be at the Winter Wonder Job Fair giving the seminar on how to find a new job and the new rules of job seeking. There will also be about 12 companies represented at the fair.

"It's a really good way to just get motivated," Hudson said. "It's a great way to just find some new skills."

The Winter Wonder Job Fair will be held at the Seawell Grand Ballroom located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex at 14th and Curtis Streets in downtown Denver. The networking party/job seeking fair runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The seminar runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit winterwonderjobs.com.
