Walmart Shoppers May Be Met By Protesters On Black Friday

DENVER (CBS4) - It's one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and instead of working, some Walmart employees are planning to protest outside stores this Black Friday. They say they want better pay and better treatment.

4 On Your Side Money Saver Suzanne McCarroll wanted to see if protests will affect Colorado Walmarts.

There is a possibility consumers will have to cross picket lines to shop. Walmart has extended hours on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Some employees aren't happy about that and they say they're unhappy with low wages and the rising cost of health insurance.

Protests are beginning at Walmarts on the East Coast. Some employees at a Walmart in Maryland say they'll make their concerns known on Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year.

"Are you scheduled to work on Black Friday?" one employee was asked.

"I am scheduled to work on Black Friday," he responded.

"Do you plan to go to work on Black Friday?" he was asked.

"I do not plan to work Black Friday," he answered.

Walmart says the protests are a publicity stunt and the company has filed a complaint to stop them, but so far some employees say nothing will stop them from showing up outside the store rather than inside the store on their work day.

So it's a possibility Colorado Walmart shoppers will be met by some protesters on Friday.
