Longmont Bids For Stop In Pro Challenge Bike Race

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Longmont is the latest city in Colorado bidding to become a stage of the USA Pro Challenge bike race.

Longmont is one of 10 to 14 cities hoping to host the big event in Colorado next summer.

Bike race organizers choose cities to host the stages along the 7-day race that winds through Colorado.

There are some financial rewards to becoming a stage in the USA Pro Challenge. Boulder was part of the event this past summer where there was an economic impact of more than $1 million for the city.

The race is also watched live by an estimated 15 million people in Europe. Many towns in the High Country hope becoming a stage will help tourism starting with this year's ski season.

Stops that have been featured on both USA Pro Challenge races in Colorado include: Denver, Golden, Crested Butte, Aspen, Breckenridge and Colorado Springs.

The bidding process began in October.
