Broomfield Police Investigate Deadly Shooting

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Broomfield are investigating after a deadly shooting Friday afternoon.

Lawrence Raymond Crouch, 62, has been arrested and a Broomfield woman, identified as Mary McGrath, 56, has died.

Officers responded at about 2:30 p.m. to the East of Sweden Saab Repair Shop located at 155 Commerce Street in Broomfield Friday on reports of gunshots fired. When officers arrived they found McGrath with multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died a short time later.

Police said Crouch stayed at the scene and was taken into custody.

A bomb squad was called out because of reports that the suspect may have had a bomb in his car. Crews detonated the device as a precaution.

"Once police were at the scene we were also told it was possible there were explosives at the scene," Sgt. David Walts with Broomfield police said.

Local businesses were evacuated and surrounding roads were closed during the investigation.

Sources said McGrath worked as the shop's bookkeeper and the owner apparently thought she was cheating the business. Crouch is said to be the shop owner's friend but his motive isn't clear.

Sources also said the owner expressed surprise by the shooting and said he had nothing to do with it.

Several witnesses were inside the shop during the shooting. One of them called 911.
