DENVER (CBS4) – Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler says a voter registration campaign exceeded expectations.
Gessler says Colorado now has more registered voters than ever before.
From Sept.1 through Oct. 9 more than 79,000 people registered to vote. There are 400,000 more registered voters in Colorado compared to four years ago.
More than 3.6 million people are now registered to vote in Colorado. The Secretary of State’s Office says that number will increase because not all the registrations have been counted.
“I think what contributed to this increase was the fact that this Secretary of State’s Office spent $1 million and targeted effective ads and mail to encourage people to register to vote,” Gessler said.
Despite that House Democrats say Gessler isn’t running fair elections. They want to propose a bill next year that would protect voting rights and clarify the authority of the secretary of state.
