DENVER (AP/CBS4) – A Denver brewery is offering a new beer with a kick.
The Wynkoop Brewing Co. on Monday will begin offering customers a small batch of Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout, but it doesn’t contain shellfish. Rocky Mountain oysters are a delicate delicacy made from fried bull testicles.
The beer started as an April Fools’ Day joke. The brewery put out a spoof video claiming they had made a beer with the unusual local dish.
“When we sent out the press release and the video link last April, we heard from brewers and beer writers who thought the beer was for real and loved the idea,” Wynkoop wrote on their website. “They wanted samples. So did many patrons who came to the pub to try the beer.”
So the company began brewing, and was inspired in part by Odell Brewing’s stout made with oysters for the Jax seafood restaurants in Boulder and Denver.
Wynkoop’s representatives say the Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is made with “Colorado-grown base malts, roasted barley, seven specialty malts and Styrian Goldings hops” as well as sea salt.
The beer will be among the offerings at Wynkoop’s space at the Great American Beer Festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the Colorado Convention Center.
