WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – A 7-year-old boy remains at The Children’s Hospital after being hit by a truck and then dragged 50 feet.
The incident happened Monday night on West 132nd Avenue in Westminster when the boy was riding a tricycle in the Casa Estates near his home.
Witnesses said a man driving a truck hit the boy around 7 p.m. The 48-year-old driver, also a resident of Casa Estates, was arrested for careless driving and was released later Monday night.
Witnesses say the truck may have been speeding when the boy was hit and dragged. The man stayed at the scene. A witness said the man seemed to be in denial.
“He looked really weird. He was like, ‘I didn’t hit a kid, I didn’t hit that kid.’ We were like, ‘Yes, we watched you,’ ” witness Aymber Lahr said. “The sparks were coming out from his bike which was wedged under there, and that, well, the way he was positioned, that saved his life.”
Police are investigating to see if alcohol or drugs were involved. Police haven’t released the man’s name but said he has been charged with careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury.
The child’s identity and condition haven’t been released.
