Northern Colorado Business Benefits From iPhone Success

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - The iPhone 5 has set sales records and it's not just Apple cashing in. A company in Northern Colorado is also benefiting.

Employees at OtterBox have been working at a feverish pace. The iPhone 5 is the fastest selling iPhone yet, and OtterBox is trying to keep up.

"We're trying to get as much product out to meet the demand of the phone as its released," an OtterBox employee said. "We're very much in overdrive, as we like to call it, it's otter speed."

Because of the high demand for the new Apple iPhone 5, OtterBox currently has 160 employees working two shifts a day and that's all in packaging and shipping alone.

"When this kind of launch happens it's kind of like all hands on deck," OtterBox President and CEO Brian Thomas said.

Thomas says a product with so much hype is a big money maker for the company.

"We'll do probably 2/3rds of our business in the last six months of the year," Thomas said.

The good news is not only for the company, but for Northern Colorado as well. OtterBox, which employees 650 full-time workers, says a product launch like the iPhone also boosts the local economy.

"We have vendors and suppliers from around the globe coming into Fort Collins, Northern Colorado, to work with us," Thomas said.

OtterBox also hires more temporary workers to help keep up with the demand of the iPhone cases, boosting the economy one iPhone case at a time.
