Colorado Democrats React To Romney's Choice Of Running Mate

DENVER (CBS4)- Colorado's elected Democratic leaders are reacting to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's choice for a running mate.

Romney named Rep. Paul Ryan to join the Republican ticket in his bid for the White House.

Ryan, 42, is chairman of the House Budget Committee and primary author of conservative tax-and-spending blueprints that the tea party-infused Republican majority approved despite Democratic opposition in 2011 and again in 2012.

Rep. Ed Perlmutter, a Democrat representing Colorado, said, "Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee solidifies their extreme commitment to more budget-busting tax cuts for billionaires and millionaires paid for by senior citizens and hardworking Americans. Romney and Ryan will continue their efforts to dismantle Medicare and shift thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors."

Rep. Diana DeGette, a Democrat representing Colorado, said, "With the selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, Mitt Romney left no doubt that his presidency would be disastrous for our middle class families. In Congress, Paul Ryan pushed a budget that would end Medicare as we know it and gut critical safety nets for our most vulnerable -- children and seniors, while giving tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. And to add insult to injury, the Ryan budget would destroy 4.1 million American jobs through 2014. Romney's selection of Ryan makes it a very clear choice for voters in America: preserve Medicare and strengthen the middle class or give tax breaks to millionaires."

Colorado Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio said, "The Romney-Ryan agenda fights for trillions in tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires while ending Medicare as we know it, privatizing Social Security, and raising taxes by as much as $2,000 a year for middle class families."
