GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4)- A Jefferson County couple convicted of starving and beating their adopted son were sentenced on Friday.
Christine and Randal Arnold were convicted of child abuse with serious bodily injury. Their adopted boy had weighed only 30 pounds and was suffering from bruises when the 6-year-old was found by first responders at their home in 2010.
Christine Arnold placed a 911 call reportedly telling authorities the boy had fallen down a flight of stairs.
Christine Arnold was sentenced to 22 years and Randal Arnold was sentenced to 18 years.
Today’s sentencing was rescheduled after the district attorney’s office said they attempted to commit suicide in June.
Last month, a relative went to the Arnolds’ home to drive them to the sentencing hearing, found them unresponsive and called 911. Paramedics took the couple to the hospital and they are alive. Officials believe the Arnolds took some pills.
