STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Steamboat Springs are searching for the suspect or suspects who are behind a rash of car break-ins.
There have been nearly 40 cases in the last 10 days.
The break-ins are happening in a neighborhood near the ski area which is a mix of tourist lodging and permanent residents.
Detectives said the break-ins have a lot in common.
“It’s a crime of opportunity, all the cars have been unlocked and we’ve really tried to let our residents know that even though we’re in a resort town, be sure to lock your car. Normal criminals will take the path of least resistance,” said Steamboat Springs Police Capt. Jerry Stabil.
Police believe the sudden increase in thefts could be tied to a career criminal recently getting out of jail.
