Arkansas River Reopens To Rafters After Wildfire

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) -- A stretch of the Arkansas River west of Canon City is open to rafters again now that a small wildfire has been contained.

U.S. Highway 50, which winds along the river, also reopened to traffic Thursday afternoon, about 24 hours after the Spike Buck fire started along the road.

It spread to 6 acres before it was fully contained. BLM Royal Gorge Field Manager Keith Berger said cooler weather and higher humidity helped firefighters.

A highway mower is suspected of starting the fire.
