Dogs are definitely a part of their owner’s families, and Denver is a great dog-friendly city. With the summer upon us and the fall and winter months approaching, it’s a great time to think about building a doghouse from scratch. Not only will you be keeping your beloved pet safe, but this can be done as a fun family activity.
1. Budget
The first thing you should do is to make a projected budget and see how much you can afford to spend. With some dogs being considered as another family member, spoil your pup with a more lavish living space.
2. Purchase The Parts
There are plenty of websites online that can help you build the doghouse step by step. Look around to ensure you will only buy the necessary supplies. One caution is to be careful when working with treated wood since these woods can be toxic to animals. You will need boards to construct the four walls, plywood for the walls, shingles for the roof, nails and the appropriate tools. Once you have it built, don’t forget to add shingles, which can be found at your local lumber yard.
3. Consider The Components
Once you have the doghouse built, you will probably want to paint it. Be sure not to use paint with lead in it. However, if your dog likes to chew on things, you may not want to add the paint. Add a sign to label the resident of the new house. Also, what does your dog need to sleep comfortably? Do you want to carpet it or add a dog bed?
4. Keep Your Pooch Entertained
When you have the doghouse built, the last thing you need to do is add your pet’s toys. Since it’s hot during Denver summers, it’s very important to make sure there is a water bowl filled with fresh water at all times. Ensure your dog has all of his/her favorite toys and stuffed animals.
5. Maintenance
For your pet’s health, it’s important to keep the doghouse clean. Each month, you should remove everything and use a garden hose to clean it out. Be careful as to what cleaning solutions are used and make sure that they are pet friendly. If there is a dog bed, you can throw that in the washer and run the water and food bowls through the dishwasher.
