Former DU Gymnast To Compete In London Olympics

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - We are all looking for the next best athlete, and she may be training in our backyard.

Gymnast Jessica Lopez, who trains in Wheat Ridge at the TIGAR gym, will compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Lopez, a five-time All-American at the University of Denver, will represent her native Venezuela in London. The gymnast debuted 40th at the Beijing Summer Games in 2008. She finished 10th at the 2010 World Championships.

Lopez will compete in the all-around competition. Her best event is the uneven bars.

This past Saturday Lopez demonstrated her uneven bars routine for the first time at the TIGAR Gym. It has been a work in progress for the 26-year-old.

"It takes a lot of time learning the combinations and putting the routine together." Lopez said.

After she leaves the states, Lopez will train with the Spanish national team in Madrid. The lone member for the Venezuelan gymnastics team has gold aspirations.

"Everyone that is going to be there, they want to get a gold medal, but obviously there is only one. In my case, I'm going to be happy to do my routines; keep my routines with the level of difficulty that I have been training. After that, just have to wait and see the results." Lopez said.

The Women's Individual All-Around begins on Aug. 2 at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
