Police Find Their Suspect In Breckenridge Murder Case

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A suspected murderer is off the streets and trails in Summit County.

Three weeks ago the body of Karl Kohler, 45, was found in the forest near Breckenridge ski resort. On Thursday Summit County sheriff's deputies found their suspect, arresting Gregory Gavin, 50.

"The arrest was made yesterday afternoon outside the Keystone area," said Summit County Undersheriff Derek Woodman. That's about 15 miles away from the murder scene.

Investigators say the two men lived in the forest and that after the murder Gavin moved to a different part of the woods. Permanent camping in the forest is fairly common.

"It's not necessarily a legal situation, according to the U.S. Forest Service because you cannot use the forest as your home," Woodman said. "But as far as problems or problematic issues arising out of that population; not necessarily a huge issue."

"We believe this was an isolated incident and the community of Summit County and the camping community from which this revolved; this no longer poses a danger to them," said Scott Turner, 5th Judicial Chief Deputy District Attorney.

Gavin has a $250 million bond and is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing in early August.

The sheriff's office wouldn't release many details about the crime or Gavin's history, but said he's lived in the county for several years, and was unemployed.
