Pizza Parlor Serves Up Pies With A Purpose

DENVER (CBS4) - 4 On Your Side Money Saver Suzanne McCarroll found a perfect reason to enjoy guilt-free pizza. Diners say it's pizza with a purpose.

The slices at Pizza Fusion are helping the staff there get a fresh start. They have meat pizza, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free -- anything pizza lovers might want. And for the employees, serving the pizza is everything they want.

The restaurant is helping employees put their lives back together. April became a mother at age 13 and has struggled to find a job ever since.

"I've been out of work for a while. I had a daughter. (It's) helping me get back on my feet," April said.

Paul and his young son were homeless until a position at Pizza Fusion came along.

"We were in a situation where we didn't have no money and we didn't have a place to stay," Paul said.

The restaurant is run and owned by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

"It gives them ability to not only financially get themselves back on their feet again, but to just have confidence and achieve some independence," Mary Putman with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless said.

Patrons like the restaurant's mission as much as they like the meals.

"I love the Greek pizza here. It's delicious and we also love coming here because of the mission of the organization," one patron said. "We just believe in it and want to support it."

The slices of pizza help those struggling get a taste of a new way of life.

"I like the people I work with," Paul said. "I like having a job, getting a check, and I like working here; it's fun for me."

Prices range from $6 for a personal pizza to $26. The restaurant was designed to be environmentally friendly. Pizza Fusion is located at East Colfax and Pearl Street.
