Man Still Hospitalized After Mother's Day Beating In LoDo
DENVER (CBS4) - Police are trying to track down as many as nine men who were involved in a brutal attack in Downtown Denver on May 13.
Two men were beaten so badly that one remains at Denver Health Medical Center with severe head injuries.
The incidents happened outside The Drink bar on 15th near Market Street. The victims believe they were picked at random.
Police have arrested only one man in connection with the beatings. They're hoping that suspect will lead them to the other men who assaulted the two men who were out on the town for the night.
"It's not just my best friend to me, it's somebody I love," Ryan Harris said.
The tears have been hard to hold back for 26-year-old Harris. His best friend, Shane Wise, has been hospitalized with severe head injuries since the Mother's Day attack. They were trying to catch a cab at 15th between Market and Larimer when the attack occurred.
"A car pulled up and there were a few guys in back seat and they were staring at us," Harris said.
Harris says the car then pulled over.
"I get hit and that's all I remember at that point," he said. "Talking to detectives, what they see later on, is we were surrounded by ten guys or more."
"It couldn't have lasted more than two minutes," Shane Wise's twin brother Kellen Wise said.
Kellen Wise was separated from the two men moments before the assault. He did see a group of men running away and then spotted his twin brother on the ground.
Shane Wise ended up with multiple fractures to his face, skull and bleeding to the brain. The recovery could take months.
"When he talks, it's a mix between maybe a 3-year-old and a really intoxicated person," Kellen Wise said. "It just doesn't really flow."
Police arrested Dominic Perez, 23, as an accessory to first-degree assault. They're not releasing his photo, hoping that he will lead detectives to the other men they are looking for.
"People that are downtown be conscious of your surroundings," Harris said. "The only thing I've learned from it is to value the people in your life."
Both Shane Wise and Harris don't have medical insurance. The medical bills are mounting, so friends and family are planning a benefit to help raise money on June 30 at Mullen High School.
