BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) – The woman who was shot after allegedly wandering into a Boulder home last week while drunk is out of the hospital and has been booked on a felony trespassing charge in Boulder County Jail.

Zoey Ripple, 21, was arrested Tuesday for first-degree criminal trespassing. She’s been recovering from a gunshot wound after the homeowner shot her in the hip when she entered their master bedroom last week.

Ripple posted $5,000 bond. Her next court appearance is June 16.

Her attorney, Colette Cribari, said her client is traumatized about what happened.

Police said Ripple, who graduated from the University of Colorado this month, had a blood alcohol level that was above .20 at the time of the incident. They said the 21-year-old entered the home on the 400 block of College Avenue early last Wednesday morning. That’s when a married couple who live in the home were awakened by a noise which they originally thought was a raccoon outside their exterior bedroom door.

Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett said the situation appears to be an unusual one.

“It appears to be one of those random situations of somebody becoming very intoxicated and going into the wrong house,” said Garnett.

When the woman realized the noise was not a raccoon, but someone who had opened the door and entered the bedroom, both she and her husband shouted for the intruder to get out.

The homeowners then told police they continued to shout to warn the intruder to leave. The man shouted that he had a gun and would use it if the intruder didn’t leave immediately. The person police said was Ripple kept walking through the bedroom toward the couple. They said they could see a light she was carrying as she continued toward the bed.

The husband and wife told police Ripple would not acknowledge their demands to leave. That’s when the husband fired one shot towards the light and heard what sounded like something falling to the floor.

When the husband turned on the light, the couple saw Ripple on the floor with a gunshot wound to her hip. That’s when the couple called 911.

A portion of that 911 call lies below:

Caller: “Somebody came into our house.”
911 Dispatcher: “4– College Ave. Is that correct?”
Caller: “Yes.”
911 Dispatcher: “Are they in there right now?”
Caller: “Yes, she’s in the house now, she’s awake. She looks fine but she’s shot.”
911 Dispatcher: “Somebody was shot?”
Caller: “Yes! Somebody was shot! She walked into our bedroom and we told her we were screaming at her and she kept coming in the bedroom and we shot her.”
911 Dispatcher: “Okay, you shot the suspect that came into your, your…”
Caller: “Yes, yes!”
911 Dispatcher: “Okay.”

Last Thursday, Ripple’s roommate Patrick Mulholland told CBS4 he and his friends have been trying to figure out why Ripple strayed into a home of people she didn’t know.

“She’s one of the most innocent people we know. Out of everyone we know she’s the last person you would expect that to happen to,” he said.

Mulholland said Ripple was hanging out with him and other friends earlier the night of the incident and that at one point in the night she got separated from everyone.

“We were just out hanging around and there’s a huge gap of time that people are still trying to figure out what happened,” he said.

Ripple lives about 10 blocks from the home where she was shot.

Garnett said trespassing charges are fairly common in the area, “My office staff estimates between 12-20 and filings like this a year with drunken people, usually college students going into the wrong house.”

Cribari said she is disappointed the DA’s office has decided to file charges against Ripple, saying that the situation was out of character for the recent college graduate, and that she never intended to commit a crime.

Ripple was hospitalized with a fractured hip from where the bullet struck her.
