Memorial Held For Transportation Workers

DENVER (CBS4/AP) - The Colorado Department of Transportation is honoring workers killed in highway accidents.

The memorial on Tuesday was held to honor 58 employees who lost their lives in the line of duty, including the 23 employees who died in work zones over the last 80 years.

"Remembrance Day and National Work Zone Awareness Week are great opportunities to not only honor the fallen, but to also remember that as motorists, we all play a role in keeping our work zones safe," CDOT Chief Engineer Tim Harris said in a statement.

The department says in Colorado last year, there were more than 830 work zone crashes.

"We must not forget that there are people behind the cones and barrels and we need to respect the work zone as well as the people working in them. If we all do our part to be safe and responsible drivers, we can make our work zones safer for everyone," Harris said.

This year, there will be about 150 projects on state highways and interstates, not including maintenance work zones.
