Colorado Springs Woman Sentenced To 20 Years For Tow Truck Dragging Death

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- A Colorado Springs woman who was convicted of dragging a tow truck driver to his death was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Friday.

In February, the jury found Detra Farries guilty of manslaughter, vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

Rose was getting ready to tow Farries' SUV Feb. 23, 2011 when she jumped in and drove off. Rose was dragged after getting caught in a cable he had attached to Farries' vehicle.

It was an emotional scene in and outside the courtroom as the victim's family testified about life without a husband and father.

Farries' family had hoped for leniency, saying that anyone who knew their mom would know this was an unintentional accident.

When asked if they thought the sentencing was fair, one of her family members screamed, "No, no!"

Farries took the stand during her sentencing and said she takes full responsibility for what happened but that she didn't mean for it to happen.

Farries' trial lasted almost a month and it took 1 1/2 days for the jury to reach a verdict.

Prosecutors asked for Farries to be sentenced to up to 36 years in prison.

Defense attorneys said Farries didn't realize Rose was being dragged behind the SUV.
