COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- An Airman assigned to the 21st Space Wing fled from custody Wednesday while returning to Teller County Jail.
Senior Airman Herbert Mullens III had been held in pretrial confinement since April 5 due to pending charges of driving while intoxicated, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The airman attended a pretrial confinement hearing on Peterson AFB Wednesday in which it was determined he will remain in confinement.
Mullens was released to two members of the 21st SW who were responsible to transport him back to Teller County Jail. During the trip, Mullens escaped custody.
Initial reports indicate he may be in the Woodland Park area. While he is still at large, Mullens is not considered dangerous. Security forces from Peterson AFB are working in conjunction with local police organizations to bring the accused into custody.
“An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the escape, and we are working with law enforcement agencies throughout the region to find and detain Airman Mullens,” said Col. Chris Crawford, 21st SW commander.
