Boulder Could Make Smoking Ban Even Tougher

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) – The city of Boulder is considering making its smoking ban even tougher.

The Daily Camera reports the mayor and city council may add the Pearl Street Mall, public parks and open space areas to the list of places where smoking is no longer allowed.

The mayor hopes to have council members work on a bill later this year.

Boulder was one of the first places in the state to ban smoking in bars, restaurants and work places in 1995.

Frankly, I leved in Boulder whn they voted in this ban. I voted against it because even as a non smoker, I don’t have the right to tell someone they can’t smoke in public.

Another reason not to go to Boulder

People forget that Federal, State and local governments all profit from the sale of tobacco products. They are just as guilty as the manufactures’. These officials have no problem stealing smokers money then persecuting them. God Bless America.

I remember when Boulder was cool.

The fact of the matter is that second hand smoke is proven to be as detrimental and damaging to your health as smoking. Smoke all you all want, I had better not have to deal with the disgusting smell at all. The mountain air is great, quit messing it up for the rest of us and throwing your butts on the ground.

    • John

The FACT of the matter is that you don’t know what you are talking about. That theory was proved to be total B.S.Really just think about what you are saying.
If the people of Boulder want to live with laws like this so be it. But stand up and say no smoking and that you will not accept any tax money from the sale of cigarettes to be used in your town. As you know it will harm your health more than tax from gasoline witch you should not accept either. If you drive a car you have put more pollution in the air in twenty minutes than a smoker has in twenty years.

      • Travis John

Luckily my car stays parked most of the time, I would rather ride a bike so your argument there is completely invalid. Also since you are a toxicologist apparently, you should know that we generally don’t go around inhaling exhaust smoke. That would be stupid and deadly, however you do feel fine about inhaling cigarette smoke, which is stupid and deadly. Unless you actually work in an operating room and see the toll smoking takes on a body I really can’t take you seriously. As for taxing smoking, sure, go right ahead, but on the same note, I don’t want to pay any of my taxes to cover a smokers medical bills :-) Another thing about your smoking vs car emissions argument: cigarette smoke affects your neurological system via your blood stream via your alveoli in your lungs. In moments, everything you inhaled in a cigarette is passed throughout your body and ends up in your brain. A car on the other hand produces Carbon Monoxide (as an after affect) and CO2 which we also produce each time we breath. Carbon Monoxide is indeed toxic and even deadly but your body can overcome it. What you smoke in a cigarette stays in the body even though the nicotine is metabolized within an hour or so. The smoke decays the tissue throughout the body, quickly on some, and over a lifetime on others (which is why some smokers appear ok and others look pretty rough). Second hand smoke has never been shown as bogus, you might want to check your records on that one. Indeed, you are just as likely as your smoking partner to develop lung cancer or other smoking related health issues. If you want to smoke, go into your own house, close the doors and do what you will to yourself, don’t share it with the rest of us.

I would rather smell smoke, than listen to self rightious fools like yourself. Your gas guzzling car and toxic water is going to kill you long before cig smoke. Now, if you want me to clean up the butts in the Peoples Republic of Boulder, than I should stick you in a trash can first.

      • Travis John

See my above comment for my how often I drive my rather economical car. People like you who would like to attack the person probably should just keep it to themselves. You have no valid argument.

Boulder trying to ban something again…. NOOOOOOOOOOOO you don’t say. After this are they gonna pass a law that in boulder only tightly whites and granny panties can be sold. Oh and no more low rise jeans, Skate boards, dread locks, beer, no electric company or manufacturing plants, Close down the mall all those cars there have to cause some kinda pollution, Better yet they will just ban cars too. No outdoor BBQ’s, or exhaust vents above stoves in homes or restaurants…. Hell why don’t they just ban everything destroy the entire town and rebuild it with dirt roads and dung shacks all come with their own garden. Although no cows or live stock would be allowed and the methane from them will pollute their new world.

    • ella kunadi

I will agree that Boulder can be ridiculous about things, but this new law would be great. You are complaining about Boulder in general. Smoking is offensive and disgusting, and those who do it should do it in their own homes where it doesn’t permeate everything around them. I’d support outlawing smoking cigarettes altogether – everywhere!

  • ella kunadi

    It’s about time.

    • John

Ok, You sit in a twenty sqaure foot room for one hour and I will smoke four cigarettes. Then we will put a hose from a car exhaust in the room and run it for ten minutes and see witch one offends you more.

      • Travis John

Apples to Oranges genius. Find another argument.

  • Rob

I’m not a smoker, but also remember when Boulder was cool….

  • Sue Z.

Good grief, we’re talking about being outdoors, in the open. I can’t believe that someone smoking is going to pollute the air anymore than automobiles do. Leave people alone! You can’t legislate everything you don’t agree with!

  • BigR

Hey N. Korea, great idea. Test your Nukes in Boulder. We won’t miss it one bit and it will help the environment at the same time by getting rid of all the trash and bull sh**..
