Tattered Cover Bookstore Eyes DIA Move

Written by Brian Maass

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver's best-known independent bookstore, the Tattered Cover, is in negotiations to open multiple outlets at Denver International Airport.

"Yes, we're hoping to," said Tattered Cover owner and founder Joyce Meskis. "It's in the hands of the city at this point."

Meskis told CBS4 tentative plans call for the Tattered Cover to partner with Hudson News, which operates several newstands and bookstores at DIA. Under the plan, the Hudson News sites would be taken over and "re-branded" as Tattered Cover outlets, although Hudson News would continue to be involved in the operation of the bookstores.

Meskis said the initial outlet that the Tattered Cover would take over would be on the B Concourse.

"We would be working together with them but the names would be Tattered Cover," said Meskis. "I hope it happens soon."

The Tattered Cover currently operates three locations in the Denver metro area: on East Colfax, in LoDo and in Highlands Ranch.

The bookseller began 40 years ago as a 950 square foot store in the Cherry Creek North area with two employees and has since become a Denver institution.

Meskis said the DIA locations would be a "win-win."

"They (DIA) want to show travelers the connection to Denver and we would hope to have more exposure," said Meskis.
