Diabetes EXPO Will Include A 'Latino Zone' & Much More

DENVER (CBS4) - There's a free event this Saturday that could help improve one's health. CBS4 is proud to sponsor the Diabetes EXPO at the Colorado Convention Center.

With more and more children and adults being diagnosed with diabetes, preventing and understanding the warning signs is half the battle to defeating it. However, those who are not sure what they know or don't know should go to the expo.

"There's over 316,000 people in the state of Colorado alone who live with diabetes today," Sheila Beurket with the American Diabetes Association said.

There are about 26 million people living with diabetes nationwide. With so many people affected, Beurket says those who don't know someone with diabetes soon will.

"Personally, my dad is a Type 2 diabetic and I have a 10-year-old nephew who's a Type 1 diabetic. So I want to hopefully find a cure for him in his lifetime," Beurket said.

The Diabetes EXPO is free and open to the public. There will be everything from free health screenings to free cooking and exercise demonstrations, as well as a family fun zone. The expo also caters those who only speak Spanish.

"We have a whole Latino zone that's going to be staffed with bilingual staff and volunteers," Beurket said.

Everyone is welcome; however there is a target audience for the expo -- people with diabetes and their families, people at risk for diabetes and their families, and anyone interested in learning how to live a healthy and active lifestyle -- plus those who have a desire to stop diabetes.

Diabetes disproportionately affects African-Americans and Latinos.

They're expecting over 9,000 people to attend the one-day event. Entertainment legend Ben Vereen will be there to talk about living with diabetes. The expo runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
