MOAB, Utah (AP) – Authorities say the body of a missing snowmobiler who was buried in an avalanche in southern Utah was found Sunday afternoon.
Grand County Sheriff Steve White says the rider’s body was found in a remote section of the La Sal Mountains near Moab.
White told the Deseret News that the 18-year-old Colorado man was buried in about 12 feet of snow. His name wasn’t immediately released.
A group of four Colorado snowmobilers triggered the avalanche Saturday morning near Beaver Basin. Three of the four managed to escape, but were unsuccessful in their efforts to locate the missing snowmobiler.
The death marks the fifth avalanche fatality in Utah since November and the fourth since Jan. 28.
The Utah Avalanche Center says the avalanche danger remains high across most of Utah’s mountains.
