DENVER (CBS4) – Many homeowners are still working to clean up and repair damage after heavy winds swept through the Denver metro area.
Trees came down — some into cars and homes. The Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners that damage also brings out contractors looking to take advantage of victims
The BBB warns that some contractors target storm victims, often going door to door asking for work in person or leaving fliers behind.
The “storm chasers” can be anything from roofing contractors to landscapers to auto body repair companies, often telling people they can do the job right away and using scare tactics to make people feel as if the work has to be done immediately or else more damage will occur.
The BBB says always get three bids, verify businesses are legitimate and licensed, and get the work to be done in writing — detailing materials, their cost, and the cost of labor. Don’t pay in full, up front, before the work is done. And contact the insurance company first.
“So the key is, get three bids, get lots of resources and information on the company, and finally, read through that contract and understand it,” Dale Mingilton with the BBB said. “We also suggest before you hire that company, get a business card, make sure it’s a legitimate company.”
The BBB accredits businesses. There is a list on its website. Read feedback on companies and even request quotes for work that needs to be done.
There are also tips for homeowners such as things to think about before giving work to a certain company.
