DENVER (AP) — Metropolitan State College is closer to a slight name change, after the school settled a dispute with the University of Denver.
The Senate Education Committee on Thursday unanimously approved changing the name to Metropolitan State University of Denver. The school was considering asking for name changes that included the phrase “Denver State,” a change the private University of Denver said it may oppose.
In the bill’s first hearing, a representative from DU said the two schools have agreed on the name Metropolitan State University of Denver.
The change still must be approved by the full Senate and the House.
Metro State has about 24,000 students. School officials say they’re requesting the name change because they’re sometimes confused with a two-year community college.
