State Senate Committee Hears Red Light Camera Ban Bill

DENVER (CBS4) - State lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban red light cameras in Colorado.

A Senate committee heard the bill Tuesday afternoon and now it's up for its first vote.

The Republican-sponsored legislation would also ban cities and towns from speed cameras on streets and highways.

Rep. Scott Renfroe, R-Greeley, the bill's sponsor, says the cameras are more about making money than improving safety. He says making yellow lights last longer would actually improve safety.

The Colorado Municipal League opposes the legislation. The group says it should be up to local governments to decide on traffic camera laws.

Nine states have already banned the use of photo traffic enforcement.
