JeffCo Schools Cut Budget Without Cutting Teachers

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Colorado's largest school district has found a way to cut $20 million without cutting teachers.

JeffCo School District officials announced proposed budget cuts for the 2012-2013 school year.

The majority of the cuts are to central administration and support services. Employees will continue to take a three percent pay cut and two furlough days.

The district will also take an additional $5 million from a reserve fund to make up the budget shortfall. No one will be laid off.

"Our number one goal was to keep those cuts as far away from the classroom as possible and preserve jobs. JeffCo School District is the largest employer in the county," said JeffCo School Board President Lesley Dahlkemper.

District leaders are considering asking for a mill levy override this November to ward off any possible job cuts for the following school year.
