Whole Foods Seeks Higher Elevation For New Stores

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Whole Foods has cleared one hurdle to expand its chain of gourmet natural foods to Colorado's high country.

The town of Frisco gave approval Tuesday night to allow the parcel of land where Whole Foods would relocate, to be used for a grocery store. That land, located on the north end of Frisco near Interstate 70 and Highway 9, is owned by the town.

Developer David O'Neil said he has been trying for years to see if he can turn the parcel of land into a Whole Foods Market.

"We've been working hard the last year to see what the level of interest was and that it's sincere before we approached the town," said O'Neil.

"We really wanted to get it out right away to the community to get feedback," Frisco Community Development spokeswoman Jocelyn Mills.

There has been overwhelming support for the project.

"I've never seen a community react to an idea like this community. I think we have 400 friends on Facebook in three days," said O'Neil. "Whole Foods is a whole different animal, it's really an experience. We think they'll do very well if the community decides they want it."

Now that the initial approval for the land has been granted, it will still be several months or even years before shoppers can roam the aisles of Whole Foods.
