FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Pierce Hornung scored a career-high 23 points and matched a career best with 17 rebounds in leading Colorado State past Air Force 67-49 on Saturday.
Hornung posted his second double-double of the season and third of his career. He had nine offensive rebounds. He had a 17-rebound game on Nov. 29, 2009 against San Francisco.
Dorian Green had 12 points and Wes Eikmeier added 10 for Colorado State (15-7, 4-3 Mountain West).
Michael Lyons led Air Force (11-10, 1-6) with 16 points Mike Fitzgerald scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half as the Falcons lost their sixth straight game.
Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds was ejected when he received his second technical foul with 7:11 left in the game.
Air Force made a paltry 7 of 20 field goals in the first half, but trailed only 27-20 at halftime.
Colorado State continued to struggle shooting, 9 of 26, but Will Bell’s dunk put it ahead 26-17 with 2:20 left in the first half. Air Force held the Rams to a free throw the rest of the half and Lyons made it a seven-point halftime deficit with a jumper.
Lyons had four points early in the second half to get the Falcons within five, but Hornung had nine points, including a basket off a rebound, and drew a foul. Hornung’s ensuing free throw capped a 15-4 run to put Colorado State ahead 44-28 with 12:15 remaining.
Fitzgerald got Air Force within 18 over the last 3:09 with a 3-pointer and a free throw, but Colorado State’s rout was already secured.
It was the second straight game the Falcons have given up more than 65 points. Previously, they held nine straight opponents to 65 or fewer points before being blown out 81-42 at New Mexico last Tuesday.
