Xcel Energy warns homeowners to clear snow from their gas meter vent. (credit: CBS)
DENVER (CBS4)- Xcel Energy is warning customers not to bury their gas meter when shoveling.
Gas meters have a vent and it could become dangerous is that vent is buried in the snow. The air from outside mixes with the gas going into your home.
If the vent is buried, the gas can build up inside the gas line which could reach unsafe levels inside your home.
Xcel said it’s best to use a broom or brush to clear the snow, don’t use a shovel or snow blower because it could damage the equipment.
