California Pilot In Jail After Marijuana Bust At Boulder Airport

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Investigators recently found 55 pounds of marijuana after searching a small plane in Boulder.

The pilot, Carl Gruber,of Bethel Island, Calif., is now in custody. Authorities searched the plane last Saturday at the Boulder Municipal Airport. Details of the case were made public this week by authorities who worked on the case, including the Department of Homeland Security.

"It was a narcotics investigation. There was never a homeland security issue and we just want to reassure people that if it had been an issue where there had been some immediate danger to the public we would have notified them," Boulder police spokeswoman Kim Kobel said.

This case started when Homeland Security officials called Boulder police.

"They had been tracking a plane, small plane that had been piloted by one person," Boulder police spokeswoman Kim Kobel said.

When Gruber landed, members of the Boulder police and Boulder County Drug Task Force were there to meet him.

Many witnesses said they were concerned to see police cars and drug sniffing dogs at the airport during the police raid.

"We found 55 pounds of marijuana on that plane, and the pilot was arrested," Kobel said.

Gruber faces charges of possession of drugs and possession with intent to distribute that drug.
